Mother's Day originated in the United States.

On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis's mother in Philadelphia, USA, died in great sorrow.

On the anniversary of her mother's death the following year, Miss Anna organized activities to remember her mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way. Since then, she has lobbied and appealed to all sectors of society for the establishment of Mother's Day.

Her appeal received a warm response. On May 10, 1913, the United States Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution, signed by President Wilson proclamation, deciding that the second Sunday of May each year is Mother's Day

By the time Anna died in 1948, 43 countries had established Mother's Day.
